What is a Jadeite Cabochon?

Jadeite come in many shapes and sizes. One of the most popular shapes is the cabochon cut, also known as “蛋面” in mandarin. The word cabochon has French origins and the way it’s pronounced goes like this: Kar-boo-shawn. If you’re still struggling, just call it cab for short.

This particular shape is the most popular shape for a jadeite ring. Sought after by collectors, this shape is materialised because of the strong belief that good jade material does not have to be carved or specially designed to bring out its beauty. A big, proportionately shaped cabochon will be able to reflect enough light through it to enable the jade piece to reflect light well and be in the centre of attention. Unlike other gemstones which are popularly faceted, the jadeite gem is more special. Most jadeite materials for rings are not faceted but rather kept in a cabochon shape – that is why this shape commands a premium if it is of good material, often popular amongst men and women.

Traditionally, the jade cabochons will have a small dome on the other side, unlike other gems whereby they are cut flat. However, in recent times, more and more jade cabochons are cut in a flat bottom side because material is getting more expensive. Cutting it flat on the bottom side will enable the carver to make two cabochon pieces on a rounded rock, as opposed to one with a nice small belly on the bottom side. All of the cabochons sold by us are definitely double-domed, with a nice lotus seed belly to give that extra height and beauty.

For cabochon selection, one has to ensure a few factors.

1.       Size – the bigger the size of the cabochon, in general, the more expensive, due to more material being used.

2.       Proportion – the length to breadth ratio must be proportionate and pleasing to the eyes – a cabochon that is long and thin as compared to one with a nice elliptical shape would be very differently noticed by the naked eye.

3.       Thickness and cut – thickness is important as you would want a piece of jadeite cabochon with a nice fluffy dome, not flat like as if it has been sat on. A nice thick dome will truly bring out the lustre of the jadeite piece and allow it to shimmer in the light.
